Streaming platform Netflix has become a major entertainment channel for many people. However, a counterfeit APP appeared in the Google Play app store recently, tricking users into logging in and watching Netflix for free. The actual purpose is to implant malicious programs and collect users’ personal information. The capital even extorted money to defraud.

Information security research team Check Point Research found an application called " FlixOnline " in the Google Play store, trying to abduct users to download it with "free use of Netflix for two months". In fact, the real purpose is to hack the device's WhatsApp communications Software that distributes malicious links and collects user information.

After the user downloads FlixOnline, the implanted malware will monitor WhatsApp message notifications, and automatically reply to messages sent by others, and return the FlixOnline download link to the other party to attract more people to click. Malware will also try to steal WhatsApp data on, or blackmail users by sending sensitive messages through threats.

The research team found that FlixOnline has downloaded about 500 times in the past two months. Although the number is not very large, all users should be called upon from this incident to avoid random clicking on unknown links received from communication software, which may be hacked. If so, delete the relevant APP and change the password immediately. Currently, FlixOnline has been removed from the Google Play store.
